DALEMAIN HOUSE AND MIRE HOUSE - Wednesday 25 April 2018 - by coach

Dalemain House - Dalemain is one of the most beautiful and impressive stately houses in the North West of England. The finely dressed pink stone of its Georgian facade glows magnificently in the sunlight. Yet hidden behind the ordered geometry of its Palladian architecture is the story of its past. You can discover and enjoy four centuries of House Architecture, five acres of gardens and historic parkland. The house was opened to the public in 1977 but remains very much lived in by the Haswell-McCosh family, where rooms are used throughout the year. There are interesting collections of fine furniture, family portraits, ceramics, dolls’ houses and old toys. You will encounter uneven cobbled surfaces at this property.

Mire House - Mire House is quite typical of a country manor house. There are records that people lived here in the 16th century. The present House was built in 1666 by the 8th Earl of Derby for visits to his Cumbrian estates. In 1688 he sold
it to his agent Roger Gregg. This is the only time it has been sold. The Greggs and their kinsmen, the Storys, owned it until Thomas Story left it to John Spedding of Armathwaite Hall in 1802. Discover the unique literary connections to Tennyson, Fitzgerald and Wordsworth in this beautiful and welcoming, lived in, house. There will be approximately a 400 yd walk from the coach to the house.
Cost: £44.50(£46.50) - to include coach travel, morning coffee, light lunch with tea or coffee, entry to Dalemain House with tour and entry to Mire House.
